Cast

The Marvels features a star-studded cast, with Brie Larson reprising her role as the powerful Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel.

Having gained superhuman abilities after a life-changing accident, Danvers is an Avenger and former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot.

The film promises to delve deeper into her character and complexities after her origin story in Captain Marvel (2019).

Since the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Danvers has been mostly off Earth, becoming a workaholic and losing touch with her loved ones and friends.

Teyonah Parris takes on the role of Monica Rambeau, an astronaut working with Nick Fury at S.A.B.E.R., who possesses the extraordinary ability to manipulate all wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. As the daughter of Danvers’ late friend and airman, Maria Rambeau, Monica looks up to Danvers as her childhood hero.

The Marvels will further explore Monica’s character beyond her appearance in the Disney+ miniseries WandaVision (2021), showcasing her evolution as a compelling character.

Iman Vellani portrays Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel, a teenage human/Djinn mutant from Jersey City.

Kamala idolizes both Danvers and Rambeau and wears a magical bangle that grants her the power to harness cosmic energy and create hard light constructs.

Producer Kevin Feige compares Kamala’s awe in their presence to Peter Parker’s introduction in Captain America: Civil War (2016).

In preparation for the role, Vellani practiced parkour, ensuring her movements embodied Kamala’s agile nature in the film.

Zawe Ashton takes on the role of Dar-Benn, a Kree warrior revolutionary wielding an Accuser’s hammer. Dar-Benn strives to restore her homeland after a devastating civil war.

Director Nia DaCosta urged Ashton to focus on agility and strength during her training, ensuring an authentic portrayal of the character.

The film also sees the return of familiar faces, including Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as Nick Fury, the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D., now working with the Skrulls at S.A.B.E.R. in deep space.

Additionally, Lashana Lynch returns as Maria Rambeau from Captain Marvel, and Randall Park reprises his role as Jimmy Woo from previous MCU media.

The Marvels is set to be an exciting addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, introducing new characters and exploring the growth and challenges faced by the beloved heroes we already know and love.

Development

The development of the Captain Marvel sequel began with star Brie Larson expressing her interest in featuring Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel in a potential follow-up to Captain Marvel. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had previously revealed plans to introduce Kamala in the MCU, as she draws inspiration from Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel.

In March 2019, Feige teased “pretty amazing” ideas for the sequel, which could be set in the 1990s like its predecessor or in the present day. Lashana Lynch, who portrayed Maria Rambeau, also expressed her interest in reprising her role in a sequel, regardless of the timeline. At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019, Feige officially confirmed plans for the sequel.

Formal development on the film began in January 2020 when Megan McDonnell, a staff writer for Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series WandaVision, entered negotiations to pen the script. Brie Larson was confirmed to reprise her role as Carol Danvers, but directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were not expected to return.

The studio sought a female director to take the helm, eventually hiring Nia DaCosta in August 2020. DaCosta’s appointment marked a significant milestone for Marvel Studios, as she became the first Black woman to direct one of their films.

Throughout the development process, DaCosta collaborated closely with WandaVision producer Mary Livanos, who granted her creative freedom to craft the film without constraints.

The studio announced Captain Marvel 2 in December 2020, with a new release date of November 11, 2022. Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani were confirmed to reprise their roles as Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, respectively, from their respective projects, WandaVision and Ms. Marvel.

The decision to introduce Kamala and Monica in other MCU projects before they unite with Carol Danvers in this sequel was thoughtfully planned to provide narrative coherence and build anticipation for their eventual team-up. The groundwork for the highly anticipated Captain Marvel 2 had been carefully laid out, promising an exciting continuation of the beloved franchise.

The groundwork for The Marvels began in February 2021 with the casting of Zawe Ashton as the film’s villain. With all scripts for Ms. Marvel completed at that time, the creative team of The Marvels had the opportunity to explore Kamala’s story from the Disney+ series.

Brie Larson also made a cameo appearance in Ms. Marvel, setting the stage for the upcoming film.

Principal photography was scheduled to commence at the end of May, but second unit filming started earlier in April in Jersey City, New Jersey, under the working title “Goat Rodeo,” capturing essential aerial footage and establishing shots.

In May, Marvel Studios revealed the sequel’s title as The Marvels, hinting at both Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel’s inclusion in the film.

Ethan Anderton speculated that the title might allude to the connection between the characters or even draw inspiration from the 1994 comics series Marvels.

Later that month, pre-production efforts began in the United Kingdom. In June, Park Seo-joon joined the cast in an undisclosed role, reportedly as Prince Yan of the planet Aladna.

Larson and Teyonah Parris, reprising her role as Monica Rambeau from WandaVision, started their preparations for filming the following month. Director Nia DaCosta expressed that The Marvels would delve into specific, personal, and sometimes somber themes, exploring how individuals cope with pain and trauma. However, it would also feature a lighter tone than her previous works, Little Woods and Candyman.

Principal photography for The Marvels began in August 2021 at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire and Longcross Studios in Longcross, Surrey, England.

Renowned cinematographer Sean Bobbitt was on board for the project. Filming took place in various locations, including Tropea, Italy, and Los Angeles, with scenes featuring Kamala Khan’s family reprised from Ms. Marvel shot in September.

The release date was initially set for February 17, 2023, but in April 2022, it was moved to July 28, 2023, to accommodate further post-production work.  Filming concluded by mid-October 2022.

After filming, reshoots were scheduled for The Marvels in August 2022, with Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as Nick Fury.

By January 2023, it was revealed that Nia DaCosta had also contributed to the script, alongside writers Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

The release date was further delayed to November 10, 2023, allowing more time for post-production and possible reshoots.

The film underwent significant changes during this process, and Catrin Hedström took on the role of editor.

With each new development, excitement surrounding The Marvels continued to grow as fans eagerly anticipated the arrival of this highly anticipated addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

To build excitement for the film, the lead stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani appeared at the 2022 D23 Expo, where they promoted.

The Marvels and presented exclusive footage to the eager audience. The first trailer for the film, featuring the iconic song “Intergalactic” by the Beastie Boys, premiered on Good Morning America on April 11, 2023.

The teaser was met with praise, as it successfully captured the charm and action that the MCU is renowned for.

Critics noted the promising dynamics between Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan, hinting at inventive “place-switching” fight scenes.
